The activa programme has been created by Activa Health Limited, a subsidiary of the Southern Cross Medical Care Society. Southern Cross is a not-for-profit friendly society that is owned by its 840,000 New Zealand members.

With more than 40 years experience in the health insurance sector, Southern Cross recognised that there was a need to offer New Zealanders a different approach to the tasks of self-care and paying for their health expenses. Activa Health Limited was established to focus on the consumer desire for more choice, flexibility and control.
